Zoho writer

After having around both Zoho and Google it strikes me that there is a slight anomaly going on here . Let me explain for one technologically such as me and having used the Google docs option on a number of times I find the issue of these Web based offerings more challenging to manage and master . The idea of making software redundant and doing away with desktop applications should at least in theory be seen as a boon to luddites everywhere . However this is not really the case and the reality is that software which we ahve been grappling with is now in some ways our mainstay and easier to manage than say these 2 relatively new kids on the block . How one for example in Zoho manages with a document to save it and send it to say a gmail account is not straighforward , that is at least to me . Odd as the intention with both of these applications is a little like look everyone no hands as we once all said when learning to ride our bikes .

Library 2.0 and Web 2.0

In the course of these exercises the theme of rapid change and the effects that such technology will have on our library enviroments have become a constant . These 2 are no exception and yet from the range of the debate and the strong views expressed it is clear to any newcomer that the exact impact it will have on our daily work routines and our interaction with our customers is a little unclear to say the least .Being aware of what exactly is out there is fine and tailoring it to the needs of our Service is also commenable . However , wholesale adoption of what could prove to be a fad is somehow similiar to the analogy of the baby and the bathwater .

technorati

this is well , where does one start ? The word overwhelming comes to mind aside from the fact if ones does a simple calculation about the numbers doubling every 6 months according to the figures of 50 million in july 2006 . So now how many exactly 150 million plus as of a few months ago .Overload and overkill are certain reactions for the average Joe and yet to my mind its all very underwhelming as it were and why for such a supposedly state of the art development is the layout so bland and confusing . I dont wish to appear the blogging equivalent of say , David Stratton but really Margaret .

Web 2..0

This site is overwhelming and its not helped by the confusing layout which confronts the new inductee . From the list I selected the Questions and Answers category and registered with answers.yahoo.com . which did take quite a lot of time which was frustrating as i had a relatively urgent question to pose , namely just how many animals were on Noahs Ark . A good feature is after posting the question one can choose from a categoriaztion option and then browse selected answers . However the veracity of the informationn is at times dubious and not unlike the situation with the fluidity of Wikis . I would rate this site not altogether too highly as compared to another one I use , namely Answerbank.UK it lacks breadth and its layout is not too flash

wikis

The whole question of Wikis is one that we as librarians whether we like it or not will have to come to terms with as they become more popular and diffuse throughout the community .The main point to consider is that they have the potential to develop a greater sense of community when there are shared objectives and consensus . However with all things technological as say with the concept of Democracy they have also disadvantages and problems which need to be recognized . My main block to them is the whole field is so fluid and they may well prove ineffective where there is a lack of consensus and this could be a minefield to manage and control .

Bloglines is /are a whole new ballgame for one such as myself and I suspect a few of the my fellow players and teammates AKA bloggers as we now so properly call ourselves . As we step up to the plate as it were to continue the baseball analogy lets all hope we hit the bloggers equivalent of a home run . Welcome to World Series Blogger .
